Enjoyed going to plays, movies and the beach

MELROSE — Lorraine M. (Gildea) McGovern, of Melrose, passed away surrounded by family at Aberjona Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Winchester, on Friday evening February 11, 2022, at the age of 86. Lorraine was born in Chelsea on July 21, 1935 to the late Maryellen (O’Brien) Gildea.

She was raised in Chelsea and graduated from Chelsea High School. She has been a resident of Melrose for over 55 years, most recently residing at the Fitch Home. She was a long time member of the Women’s Sodality at St. Mary’s Church, enjoyed going to plays and movies, taking trips to casinos, playing cards, going to the beach and enjoyed water aerobics at the YMCA. She loved traveling to Aruba, Hawaii and Europe with her late husband, George J. McGovern, Sr.

Loving mother of George McGovern Jr. and his wife, Sharon, of Saugus; Debra Kott and her husband, Carlton, of Wareham; Robert McGovern of Malden; John McGovern and his wife, Dawn, of Methuen; Toren McGovern of Melrose and Kathleen Artz of Melrose. Beloved sister of the late John Gildea, James Gildea, Mary Tashjian and Mildred Mugford. Also survived by 14 adoring grandchildren, two great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Friday, February 18 at 9 a.m.. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Mary’s Church, 4 Herbert St. Melrose at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours Thursday, February 17 from 4 – 7 p.m. Burial will be private.
