MELROSE — Mary J. (Dillon) Doyle, 85, of Melrose, died on June 22, 2020. Mary was a beloved mom, wife, aunt, sister, and friend. She was the cherished mom of her children, Patrick and Mary.

Mary was born in Cambridge on March 6, 1935 to the late Patrick and Ellen (Gannon) Dillon.

After graduating from Sacred Heart High School in 1953, Mary worked for several years doing office work at the Boston Woven Hose and Rubber Company in Cambridge. She left her position there in 1971 to start a family and was a devoted homemaker ever since.

Before marrying John Doyle in 1969, Mary had the opportunity to travel. Among her favorite destinations were Ireland, birthplace of her parents, and Italy. Mary also enjoyed a trip across the country with friends.

While Mary was known for enjoying travel and being social, Mary was best known for her devotion to her Catholic faith. Mary believed you had nothing in life without faith. It was this sentiment that carried her through life’s challenges. She found strength, courage, solace and contentment all through her faith. It is no doubt this is why she was a staunch supporter of the Catholic Television Network.

After marriage, Mary devoted her life to her children and her mother. Mary was also considered to be a mother figure to her nieces and nephews after the deaths of her siblings. “Aunt Mary” was adored and loved by all of them.

In later years, Mary rehashed her love of travel, only this time with her daughter. In 2001, they took a special trip back to the mother county of Ireland. She also enjoyed trips to New York City, the Cape and her beloved Ogunquit, Maine.

Mary was such a selfless person and she has set the standard high for those of us left behind. We all should aspire to be as magnificent as she was. She will be sorely missed but forever loved.

Mary was the beloved wife of the late John G. Doyle. Loving mother of Patrick J. Doyle and Mary T. Doyle, both of Melrose. Sister of the late James Dillon, William Dillon, and Dorothy DeFuria. She is also survived by numerous loving nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose, on Sunday, June 28. Family and friends were respectfully invited to attend. The funeral Mass and burial will be held privately due to COVID-19 restrictions. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Catholic Television, PO Box 9196, Watertown, MA 02471.
