MALDEN — Mary L. (Prendergast) Mietzsch, a longtime resident of Malden, passed away peacefully at home on January 27, 2021, at age 75.

Mary was born in Boston, the only daughter of seven children of the late Thomas F. Prendergast and Louise J. (Curll) Prendergast. Raised in South Boston, she graduated from South Boston High School. After high school, she started working at Schraft’s in Charlestown where she met Gunter Mietzsch. Mary and Gunter were married, and they settled in Malden to raise a family of two children.

Mary enjoyed her work as a financial administrator for over 30 years at BNY Mellon in Wellington Circle. She made many lasting friendships that continued to this day.

Mary had simple, low maintenance needs in life. She enjoyed being at home, and especially enjoyed the company of her dog, Henry. For several years, she enjoyed baking cakes for family birthdays or events, and always loved watching her soap operas. In her free time, she enjoyed gardening and playing solitaire. Most of all, she cherished the time she spent with her family, especially her three grandchildren. She will be deeply missed, but always lovingly remembered.

Mary was the beloved wife of the late Gunter W. Mietzsch with whom she shared 31 years of marriage. Devoted mother of James G. Mietzsch of Malden and Heidi L. Carvalho and her late husband Valquirio of Brookline, NH. Loving sister of Thomas Prendergast and his wife Madelyn of FL, Robert Prendergast and his wife Maureen of S. Boston, James Prendergast of Malden, the late John Prendergast and his late wife Maryanne, the late Paul Prendergast and his surviving wife Christine of Hanson, and the late William Prendergast. Proud grandmother of Antonio, Mateo, and Carlos Carvalho. Caring sister-in-law of Klaus Mietzsch and his wife Donna of Stoneham. Also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Out of respect and concern for public health, Mary’s family will gather privately for a Graveside Service at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett. Gifts in Mary’s memory may be made to the Salvation Army, 25 Shawmut Rd., Canton, MA 02021. To leave a message of love and support for the family, visit RobinsonFuneralHome.com
