Served in the U.S. Army for 25 years

MELROSE — Oliver Emmett “Chuck” Childress, of Melrose, died March 4, 2022 at the VA Hospital in Bedford at the age of 77. Born in Herlong, Calif., Mr. Childress was raised in Chariton, Iowa. He graduated from Chariton High School in 1962. Mr. Childress attained an Associate Degree in management from Lasalle University. He also received numerous certificates from military and civilian schools.

He served in the U.S. Army for 25 years, attaining the grade of Sergeant First Class. He also served in the Vietnam War for six years. Mr. Childress was awarded the Combat Infantry’s Badge (CIB), Four Bronze Stars, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, two Army Commendation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals, Good Conduct Medals, and numerous service/overseas medals.

Mr. Childress is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen (Hall) Childress, and his sons: Christopher and his wife, Annette; Corey and Craig and his wife, Rachel. His five grandchildren: Christopher Jr., Lillian, Cassidy, Brooke and Connor. Other family members include his parents, the late Arthur and Mary (Briles) Childress. And his three sisters, Mary Ann, Toni, and Robin; predeceased by his three brothers Roger, Mike and Steven.
