EAST BOSTON — Paul Joseph Vignoli, Sr., 92, lifelong resident of East Boston passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness on March 27, 2018.
Beloved husband of 60 years of the late Louise H. (Brackett) Vignoli. Devoted father of Paul J. Vignoli Jr., Ellen Vignoli, Jeanne McCaldon and her husband David, and Laura Paladino, all of Melrose. Cherished grandfather of Allison, Gianna, Emma, Castor, Zachary and Anthony. Dear brother of Eleanor Ivers of Marblehead. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Paul was born to John B. Vignoli and Helen (Ivers) on February 21, 1926. Paul was a proud WWII Army veteran with the 517th Parachute Combat Team and a member of the military band. Once home, Paul followed his passion for music and played all over New England with many big bands at great places like the Hi-Hat and Downbeat clubs and the Totem Pole Ballroom. He built a reputation as one of the best tenor sax men in New England. A well-known jazz musician, Paul also played in the first rock and roll concert in Boston at Mechanics Hall alongside Chuck Berry and many other famous musicians. Paul was a talented union finish carpenter for many years.
A graduate of Fitchburg State College, he was a school teacher at Salem High School, teaching drafting and wood shop, passing on his love for finish carpentry. Paul was a proud member of the Boston Musician’s Union Local 9-535, North Shore Musicians Union Local 126, and the Carpenter’s Union Local 33. His passion for music never faded and he continued to play saxophone, clarinet and flute into his 90’s.
Paul was laid to rest on April 3 at Holy Cross Cemetery. Arrangements were under the care of the Ruggiero Family Memorial Home. For more info or to send an online condolence please visit Ruggieromh.com.
