PEABODY — Rosario R. “Russ” Burgio, of Peabody, formerly of Melrose, died on October 4, at the age of age 83. 

Russ was born and raised in South Boston, a graduate of South Boston High School and went on to proudly serve in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering as well as a Master’s Degree in Business, both from Northeastern University.

Russ enjoyed tennis, golf, growing tomatoes in his garden, relaxing by the pool, and going to the beach. He was an avid reader with a special passion for world history and current events. One of his favorite past times was playing a variety of card games including poker, bridge and cribbage. He especially loved challenging his grandchildren to the game of three-thirteen. With his lovely wife, Barbara, he enjoyed retirement by traveling worldwide and snow-birding to Florida. Russ was greatly loved and will be deeply missed by his family.

Russ was the beloved husband of 59 years to Barbara (Bates) Burgio.  Loving father of Russell R. Burgio and his wife Lois of Haverhill, Jeanne Kashima and her husband Toshi of Greenfield, Barbara Latshaw and her husband Michael of Stoneham, and Linda Giglio and her husband Robert of New Jersey.  Cherished grandfather of Allison Burgio, Hannah Cardin and her husband Bryan, Takumi Kashima, Marie Kashima, Andrea Driver and her husband Kenneth, Mark Latshaw, Renee Giglio and Benjamin Giglio. Proud great grandfather of Darby Cardin and Jacob Driver.  Caring brother of Marie DeMellia, Benjamin Burgio and his wife Christine and the late Salvatore and John Burgio.  Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation was held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Sunday, October 9. Funeral procession from Gately Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main St. Wakefield. The burial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Russ’s name to Care Dimensions Hospice, 75 Sylvan St., Suite B102, Danvers, MA 01923.
