Senior accountant for Boston public schools

WOBURN — Walter J. Szmyt, 68, a resident of Woburn and former longtime resident of Saugus, passed away peacefully at Windrose at Woburn on Tuesday, December 26, 2017.

Born in Winthrop on May 26, 1949, Walter was one of four children raised in East Boston. He graduated from East Boston High School and from Northeastern University with a degree in business. Settling in Saugus in 1978, Walter was employed as Senior Accountant for the Boston Public Schools. He worked with the Boston Public Schools for many years implementing the budget for the entire school system.

Walter was a quiet, reserved man who always took good care of himself. He was always active whether jogging or skiing in his younger years. He enjoyed watching the Boston sports teams, doing yard work, and spending time with the family. He was also a longtime member of the Andover Sportsman Club.

Walter endeared himself to many with his big, easy smile and affable nature. He will be missed but always lovingly remembered.

Walter was the cherished son of the late Walter and Rosalie “Sarah” (Pandolfo) Szmyt. Loving brother of Rosalie M. Scimone and her husband Joseph of Stoneham, Ronald M. Szmyt of Lowell, and Mary Ann Walsh and her late husband John of Medford. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends were invited to gather in honor of Walter’s life for visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Saturday, December 30, before leaving in procession to St. Anthony’s Church, 250 Revere St., Revere for his funeral Mass.
