Longtime Stoneham resident worked at New England Memorial Hospital

MELROSE — Alice M. Viola, 93, of Melrose, formerly of Stoneham died December 22 after a long period of failing health. She was born in Malden on April 17,1928 and was the daughter of the late Alfred and Mary (Higgins) Botto. Raised in Everett, she was a graduate of Everett High School, Class of 1946. She had been a resident of Stoneham since 1955 before making her home in Melrose. She was an active member of Saint Patrick Church and member of the church choir and was also a member of the Reading Community Singers. She had worked for many years at the New England Memorial Hospital. Alice also enjoyed golf and had been a member of the Thomson Country Club.

She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph E. Viola, who died in 2001. She was the loving mother of Paula Viola-Locke and her husband, Kevin Locke, of North Reading and Robert Viola and his wife, Nancy, of Melrose. She was the sister of Barbara Botto and the late Alfred Botto, Jr. and Lorraine DiPlatzi. She was also the devoted grandmother of Robert, Jr. Jeffrey and Christine and great grandmother of Joseph, Willow and Adelaide.

Her funeral Mass was celebrated in Saint Patrick Church 71 Central St. Stoneham on Wednesday, December 29 at 9 a.m. Visitation for relatives and friends was  held at the McDonald-Finnegan Funeral Home 322 Main St. Stoneham on Tuesday, December 28 from 4-7 p.m. (masks required). Interment will be at Lindenwood Cemetery in Stoneham.
