A family oriented man who had a passion for fitness

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — David Varney, of Fayetteville, NC, formerly of Melrose, passed away on January 12, 2022 at the age of 53.

David is the third child born to Robert and Ellen (Laskey) Varney. He was welcomed by the first brother, Stephen and a doting sister Michele. He then welcomed brothers Kevin and Derek to a loving family.

David and his family shared a love for the Bruins and he played Melrose youth hockey for many years with his brothers, Pops as his coach. David enjoyed watching Doctor Who, British TV and a range of movies, which he enjoyed every week with his beloved cousin Seth.

A graduate of Melrose High School, David went into the phlebotomy field, at the urging of his mom, and worked at Boston Medical center. David switched gears and started working for Hologic Systems in IT. He worked on developing programs to streamline the claims management systems.

It was then he realized he had a passion for fitness and redirected this path, receiving a certificate in massage therapy at Cortiva. After a short time working at local massage offices, David decided he wanted to have his own business, so he started the Athletes Therapeutic Massage (TATM) business. He built an amazing and loyal client base working in Melrose. Having had success, he decided he wanted to move south to North Carolina and he built a new client base. His business there is strong enough and his dream would be realized. He was close to having the funds so he could buy a house there. David worked on soldiers and athletes from as far away as Myrtle Beach and he enjoyed great success and acclaim. He was given a few nicknames, Darth masseur, Professor Pain and recently Shockwave Dave by his faithful clients. He planned on a couple of more years there and then to fulfill his dream of coming back home and buying a house close to his family. David left everybody feeling better with his skills and positive attitude.

David was the loving son of Robert and the late Ellen (Laskey) Varney. Caring brother of Michelle Varney of Melrose, Kevin Varney of Wilmington, Derek Varney and his wife, Amie, of SC and the late Stephen Varney. Devoted uncle of Colby, Tayla, Justine and Zachary. Nephew of Jane Dargan and her late husband, Tod, of Melrose and Carol “Honey” Martin and her late husband, Paul, of Amesbury.

He will be missed by his loving cousins, aunts, uncles and friends and we are sure he was welcomed on the other side by his loving mother and his big brother Stephen. “DAVEY BOY”

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Mary’s Church, Herbert St. Melrose on Friday, January 21, 2022 at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. There are no visiting hours. Interment will be private.
