A loving mother and grandmother and a member of the Red Hats

MELROSE — Dorothy F. (Dowd) McColgan, 86, of Melrose, passed away on November 25, 2021 surrounded by her loving family. Daughter of the late William and Nora (O’Keefe) Dowd.

Dorothy was raised in Charlestown and graduated from Girls Catholic High School in Boston. She moved to Melrose in 1963 to raise her family and she remained there ever since. Dorothy worked at Commercial Union Insurance Company for many years. She was also a member of the Red Hats. Most importantly, her greatest interest was always her family, particularly her grandchildren and was very proud of them all.

She was the loving mother of Jim M. McColgan and his wife, Joann, of Tewksbury; Stephen M. McColgan and his wife, Susan, of Haverhill; and Karen M. Capuano and her husband, Larry, of Melrose. Proud grandmother of Joseph Capuano and his wife, Brooke; Alyssa Capuano; Daniel McColgan; Nicole Sweeney and her husband, Mike; Lauren McColgan and Courtney McColgan; and great-grandmother of Cora Capuano. Sister of Virginia Healey, the late Thomas Dowd, and the late Margaret DiLeo. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Visiting Hours were held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose, on Tuesday, November 30 from 4 – 7 p.m. A funeral service was held at the Gately Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 1 at 10 a.m. Interment will be private.
