An avid fisher who loved a day on the water

DANVERS — Julius Contreas, 99, of Danvers, passed away quietly on December 2, 2021, at his home in Danvers.

Julius was born on March 3, 1922, in Melrose, to Celia (Paolini) and Giovani (John) Contreas, both from Italy. He attended Melrose High School, graduating in 1941. Julius began work at the East Boston Shipyard, then joined the Navel Reserve and was sent to Pearl Harbor, where he did two years of service. Once home, he was drafted into the Army. After his military service, he owned a number of convenience stores, but found his passion in carpentry, which he worked for 30 years prior to his retirement. Julius was a lifelong resident of Melrose until 14 years ago when he moved to Danvers to be close to his niece.

Julius was a member of the Lynn Fish and Game for many years and loved to travel to Canada and New Hampshire for fishing; he just relished a day on the water. In his later years, he learned to cook and delighted family holiday meals with his famous strawberry/rhubarb and raspberry/apple pies.

He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Alfred and Helen Contreas of Malden. He is also survived by nieces, Marilyn Contreas of Melrose; Jane Contreas of Weatogue, CT; Suzanne Contreas and nephew, Vincent Contreas, Jr., both of Danvers; and sister-in-law Rose Contreas, also of Danvers. He will be remembered fondly by extended family and friends.

Julius was predeceased by his three brothers, Joseph and John Contreas, both of Melrose, and Vincent Contreas of Danvers.

Funeral Services were private. Contributions may be made in his memory to the Jimmy Fund, 10 Brookline Place West, Brookline, MA 02445.
