MALDEN — The regular season is winding down in the Intercity League and the Wakefield Merchants are trying to hold onto fifth place in the standings. Losing their third straight game didn’t help.

The Merchants dropped a 4-2 contest to the Andre Chiefs last night at Maplewood Field as their record dipped to 10-17-1 on the season. Wakefield is six points ahead of the Melrose Americans and Arlington Trojans which are tied for sixth place with identical 8-19-0 records after Arlington’s 12-2 win over Melrose last night.

That will make this final week interesting as the Merchants, Trojans and Americans are battling for two playoff spots and positioning for the playoffs.

Wakefield has a game tonight against the Somerville Thunder and the Trojans on Friday night. Meanwhile, the Americans and Trojans play each other twice on Wednesday and Sunday with each team being home once and the Americans also have a makeup against Reading on Thursday night.

Jared Freni upped his record to 5-1 in the Andre Chiefs in over the Wakefield Merchants at Maplewood. Freni went the distance giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out nine and walking three.

Freni outdueled Wakefield’s Kevin Flight (0-1) who went six innings. The right-hander gave up four runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out four and walking two.

Scott Searles and Joe Breen had doubles for Wakefield. Mike Manoogian and John Davison had the other two hits for the Merchants.

Bobby Losanno scored one of the two Wakefield runs (the name of the other base runner that scored was not available) with Breen and Manoogian getting the two RBIs. Louis Tarantino stole a base.

Tarantino walked twice and BJ Neil drew one free pass.

For the Chiefs, Peter Copa had two hits including a solo homer, Mike Andre had a triple and a single and Mike Barbati (one hit) scored twice for the Chiefs.

Tony Serino, Juan Portes, Adam Lucey and Nick Leva also had hits for Andre. Lucey’s hit was a double.

Also scoring runs were Copa and Andre. Serino, Copa, Barbati and Levan drove in the four runs.

Mike Burgoyne and Mike Gedman drew the two walks giving up by Flight. Burgoyne also had a stolen base.

The Merchants scored single runs in the first and third innings while the Chiefs plated one run in the second, two in the fourth and one in the sixth.

The Merchants return to the field tonight at 8:30 p.m. when they face the last place Thunder at Trum Field. Their final game will be on Friday night at 6 p.m. when they take on Arlington at Summer Street Field.
