BEVERLY — Having just two hits makes it very hard to win a ballgame.

The Wakefield Merchants were held to just a single and a triple as they had their unbeaten streak snapped with a 3-1 setback against the Reading Bulldogs last night at Endicott College.

Wakefield fell to 5-10-1 in the Intercity League standings with the loss and remained in sixth place. Reading, meanwhile, increased its record to 13-5-0 and is in first place.

Louis Tarantino and Josh Band had the two hits with Band’s hit being a triple. Band also scored the lone run with Mike Sorrentino getting the RBI.

The Merchants scored their lone run in the top of the seventh to ruin the shutout bid of the Bulldogs.

Wayne Lundgren (3-1) pitched the first six innings and shut down the Wakefield lineup as he held the Merchants to just one hit while striking out six batters and walking no one.

Cody Hall earned his first save as he surrendered a run on one hit.

Kyle McCarthy (0-4) took the loss for Wakefield. The left-hander gave up three runs (one earned) on seven hits while striking out two and walking two in five and two-thirds innings of work.

Drew Johnson pitched a third of an inning and gave up no runs on no hits.

The Bulldogs scored a run in the first inning and two in the second inning.

Nick Berno, Darren Hartwell, Kyle Devin, Zac Talis, Nick Quatro, Corey DiLoretto and Roasrio Missiti each had a hit for Reading. Devin’s was big one as he hit a solo home run.

In addition to Devin crossing the plate, Missiti and Chris Bosco scored the Reading runs. Berno also drove in a run.

Bosco stole a base and Harry Oringer and Missiti drew the two walks by McCarthy.

The Merchants host the Somerville Royals tomorrow night at 6 p.m. at Walsh Field and hope to get back on the winning track.
