LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield High School Chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 46 new members in a candlelight ceremony on April 27.

The ceremony began when National Honor Society President William Klotzbier welcomed the new inductees and their families to the event. He led the students and attendees during a rendition of the Pledge of Allegiance and had the current senior members extinguish their candles.

National Honor Society Historian Danielle Douglas gave a history lesson of the nation’s premier organization established to recognize high school students who excel in the classroom.

Four ideals have served as the foundation of each NHS chapter since the organization was founded: Scholarship, character, leadership and service.

During the ceremony, NHS Vice President Lilli Patterson discussed scholarship. NHS Secretary Ava Figucia discussed character. NHS Treasurer Danielle Colucci discussed leadership. National Honor Society Tutor Coordinator Nickolas Zhang discussed service.

Three teachers were recognized during the ceremony as well. National Honor Society member Patrick Passatempo paid tribute to math teacher Leane Manderson. NHS inductee David Henriques honored Latin teacher Margaret McGill. Figucia honored English teacher Joseph Puleo.

Superintendent of Schools Jane Tremblay thanked History Department Head Michael Boulay and Math Department Head Marylou Sambatakos for their “leadership as advisors” to the National Honor Society.

“Their leadership has been exemplary for our students,” said Tremblay.

Tremblay congratulated Manderson, McGill and Puleo for being recognized during the ceremony.

“As a teacher, I will tell you the highest compliment you can ever receive is to be recognized by the students,” said Tremblay. “I have no doubt that each of you are, in Dr. Robert Brooks’ words, a charismatic adult to not only these students on the stage this evening but to students who walk the halls of LHS everyday. They are privileged to have you as their teachers. Your efforts in and out of the classroom do not go unnoticed.”

Tremblay congratulated the 46 students for being inducted into the National Honor Society.

“I think when most people think of the National Honor Society, they think of the scholarship part of the organization,” said Tremblay. “Undoubtedly, you have worked incredibly hard. Your dedication and commitment to your work is evident. You have chosen to make your studies a priority and your efforts have paid off.”

Tremblay said the 46 inductees also demonstrate NHS’ leadership, service and character pillars.

“In order to take a seat on this stage tonight, you needed to demonstrate success in all three of these,” said Tremblay. “And I will tell you as the leader of the school district, I am very proud of you as are the people sitting in this auditorium tonight. Your leadership moving forward will serve as a model to your peers. Leading by not only example but great example is one of the most powerful gifts you can give to this community. Service is about putting others before yourself. You have clearly done this, and I encourage you to continue to give service far beyond your years at LHS.”

Tremblay said character is “the most important” of NHS’ pillars.

“Having high character is about being genuine, sincere, trustworthy, kind and empathetic all wrapped up in a neat little package of humility,” said Tremblay. “So when the ceremony is over and you come back to school tomorrow, you will be a member of the National Honor Society. You will be a leader, leading by great example, with high character. I encourage you continue to look for ways to put others first.”
