North Reading High School track and field standout Billy Lord was named Moynihan Lumber Male Student-Athlete of the Month for March. Kristina Rossignoll of Peabody High was the female winner.

Lord, a junior who runs cross country in the fall, indoor track during the winter months and outdoor track and field in the spring at North Reading, has decimated the competition through his running exploits.

He was fifth in the country in the Emerging Elite event for the 60-meter hurdles in New York City this winter during the New Balance Indoor National Championships. Lord was also named the Cape Ann League MVP for winter track, won team MVP honors for the Hornets, was the CAL titlist in both the 55 meters and long jump, and was the Division 4 state champion in the 55-meter hurdles. In addition, he placed third at the All-State Meet in the 55 hurdles and was fifth at the New England Championships in the same event.

Lord also takes part in the long jump, high jump and 4×200 relay team indoors, adding the 4×100 relay in the outdoor season.

“Whatever I’m taking part in, I like to use my speed and talent in those events,” he said. “My favorites are the high hurdles and 4×100, while the high jump is the hardest; I’ve worked on my stretching and lots of drills to improve my ability in that event.”

Lord takes a number of challenging classes, including Honors history, and is an A/B student. He loves studying history and discovering new factoids and anecdotes from the past. “To know that all of this stuff happened before I was even born, I love that,” said Lord, whose favorite area of U.S. history is World War II.

He is already exploring his college options, which include the University of Rhode Island, Stonehill, the University of Maine, UMass Amherst and UMass Lowell.

“Track and field is a lot of work,” he said, “but it’s so much fun, too. You can meet new people, make great friends and constantly challenge yourself to do better athletically.”
