NORTH READING — North Reading’s Community Band performs a free Pops concert tonight (June 30) from the Bandstand on the Town Common, 6:30 – 8 p.m., weather permitting. Bring a lawn chair or blanket.

Judith Allen will conduct the 20-piece band.

As always the program will include popular and classic concert works from Ralph Vaughn Williams to Leroy Anderson.

Broadway and film selections are from “Chicago” and “Little Mermaid,” respectively.

Tributes to 20th Century artists Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong are also featured as is a haunting Frank Ticheli arrangement of the traditional tune “Shenandoah.”

“No Reading,” the improvisational Dixieland band-within-the-band, will play “Deep River Blues” and “Under the Double Eagle” during intermission.

No concert near the 4th of July is complete without a medley of tunes by George M. Cohan, the original Yankee Doodle Dandy.

The concert will close with Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever” featuring Tori Griffen and Mary Thomas playing the piccolo solo.

New musicians of all ages are always welcome at the Thursday evening rehearsals. For more information contact Phil Norris, 978-664-2422.
