Hornets host Hamilton-Wenham Wednesday night

NORTH READING — The Lady Hornets earned their best win of the 2017-18 regular season by defeating the CAL Kinney Division Champion and Division 2 North powerhouse Pentucket Sachems, 46-31 in both teams’ regular season finales on Wednesday, Feb. 21.  

Junior Mia DeNofrio was the game’s high-scorer with a career high 14 points and freshman Julia Howse added 8 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Before the gam,e the CAL Awards were announced. Sophomore Allie Grasso was named to the All-League Team and junior Casey McAuliffe and sophomore Lauren Sullivan were named CAL All-Stars.

It was a high-scoring first quarter. A total of 29 points were scored and Pentucket led by one at 15-14 after one.

The second quarter was a completely different story as North Reading’s tenacious defense suffocated the Sachems. NRHS outscored the visitors by an impressive 13-2 margin and took a 27-17 lead into the break. The Hornets increased their lead in the second half and won by 15.

Earn 5th seed in Division 2 North Tourney

Thanks to their monumental upset win over Pentucket, the Hornets finished the regular season 15-5 overall and 10-5 in the CAL. They earned the 5th seed in the Division 2 North State Sectional Tournament and will take on familiar foe Hamilton-Wenham in the first round on Wednesday night at NRHS. (Results not available at press time). If the Hornets win they will travel to #4 Wakefield to play the Warriors in the quarterfinals. The day and time for that game is to be announced.
