METHUEN — The NRHS varsity cheerleaders won the Div. 4 North championship this past Sunday, as they scored a 190.9 out of 220 to improve their CAL’s score by 5.5 points and advance to States, which will take place this Sunday at Whitman-Hanson High School.
The Hornets got the second highest score of the day at CAL’s to send them to regionals, and they only got better, which is a big accomplishment considering that they have dealt with plenty of adversity by way of injury and other roster changes.
“I told them, ‘life is 10 percent what happens to you and 90 percent how you deal with it,’” said head coach Kathleen Roy. “They’ve really deal with adversity well.”
Roy was quick to credit her two senior captains, Alex Colella and Isabella Mejia.
The Hornets also had a representative on the All-League team as senior Grace Exum got the nod.
“Grace Exum is the heart of the team,” said Roy. “She is the best teammate you could ever ask for.”
Sophomore Alanna Hill received the coaches award, sophomore Isabella Parrett won the Unsung Heroine Award, and senior Kasey Kavanaugh was the team MVP.
The other seniors include Ashley Bage-Hoff, Veronika Fortin and Abigail Leighton.
“The team has worked really hard and pushed themselves to get to this point,” said Roy. “It’s a really good group. They have been a pleasure to be around and a pleasure to coach.”
