NORTH READING — On Memorial Day, the NRHS girls’ tennis team traveled to Swampscott for their regular season finale and downed the Big Blue 3-2. With the win NRHS finished with a record of 13-7.

At first singles, sophomore Ava Czarnota won 6-4, 6-4. Freshman Gina Campagna earned yet another impressive win at third singles 6-1, 6-1. Senior captain Sydney Davis and Elizabeth Grant clinched the match win with a thrilling three set victory at first doubles 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

The second doubles duo of senior captain Jillian Coveney and senior Haley MacIntyre lost a hard fought three set affair 5-7, 6-3, 10-7.  At second singles senior captain Kylie Scher lost 6-4, 6-0.

Crush Lowell Catholic in D3N First Round

On Sunday the 8, seeded Hornets opened the state tournament with an easy 5-0 victory over Lowell Catholic in the First Round of the Division 3 North State Sectional Tournament.

Gina Campagna picked up the first win of the day without dropping a game at third singles 6-0, 6-0.  At second doubles Jillian Coveney and Haley MacIntyre won easily 6–1, 6-0 and Kylie Scher clinched the match for North Reading with a 6-0, 6-2 win at second singles.

At first doubles, Sydney Davis and Elizabeth Grant won a quick three setter 1-6, 6-1, 6-0. For the second time this season, Ava Czarnota beat her good friend and off-season training partner Libby Keefe 2-6, 6-0, 10-6.

The Hornets played top-seeded and undefeated Weston on Tuesday after press time and fell 5-0. A full story will appear in next week’s Transcript.
