BOSTON — On Saturday, Feb. 29 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, history was made for North Reading High School.
Senior Billy Lord was crowned New England Open Champion, the first in school history, as he took home the 55 meter hurdle title in a new school record and New England season best time of 7.37, which is also one of the fastest times in the country.
“Time and time again, Billy amazes all of us at what he can accomplish,” said head coach Ryan Spinney. “He came into the meet as the top seed and a slight favorite to win the event. He was calm, focused and turned in his greatest performance yet. That is a testament to his desire to be the very best. This is so fitting that he be crowned the fastest in New England because he absolutely deserves it.”
Spinney also pointed out that Lord’s success is certainly influenced by the expert hurdle coaching of Kirsten MacLellan, a former Division I hurdler at Duke and a tremendous asset to the NRHS track staff.
“Our hurdlers are consistently among the best at the divisional, state and now New England competition level year in and out and there is no doubt about it that Coach ‘K-Mac’ is the deciding factor with that. We are so lucky to have her knowledge about hurdles and how she adds to the positive coaching environment for staff and athletes alike.”
The next step for Lord will be the National Championship at the Armory in New York City on Saturday, March 14. Good luck, Billy! We are all pulling for you!
