NORTH READING — North Reading High field hockey coach Andrea Slaven recently gave out her individual end-of-season awards to her team. Ava Czarnota and Rees Lord were named the Hornets co-MVP’s.

Czarnota, a forward, led the team in points as she had 10 goals and six assists. Lord, meanwhile, quarterbacked the Hornet midfield.

Both players are senior co-captains.

The Coaches Award went to two players as well, junior defenseman Emily Sonia and senior forward Paige Thibodeau. Thibodeau had four goals and a team-high seven assists.

Freshman forward Keely Hannon received the team’s Most Improved Player Award.

The Unsung Heroine Award went to forward Morgan Majeski. The senior captain played forward and she had seven goals and one assist this fall.

Fellow senior co-captain Emma Borland captured the Super 8 Senior Award. The goalie gave up 24 goals in 10 games as she had a .750 save percentage.

The Game Ball Effort Award went to Mary Majeski on the offensive end while junior Amelia Milano won it on the defensive end.

Mary Majeski, Morgan’s sophomore sister, was second on the team in points as she had five goals and six assists.

It was another successful season for the North Reading High field hockey team this fall as the Hornets finished at 5-3-2. With 16 points, Newburyport won the Cape Ann League Kinney division going 8-2 while the Hornets were second with 12 points.

“What was funny is that we scored 35 goals in 18 games last year while we had 41 goals in only 10 games this year,” pointed out North Reading head coach Andrea Slaven.

Czarnota recorded two hat tricks this year against Triton and Rockport. The Majeski sisters had the two other ones as Morgan had hers against Hamilton-Wenham while Mary had hers against Newburyport.

Rees Lord and Amelia Milano both led the team in defensive saves with three. Lord’s freshman sister, Makenna, had one.

Due to too many schools being in the “Red” area because of the COVID-19 crisis, the CAL canceled their league tournament they planned to do at the start of the season.

The league coaches will be meeting soon to select their All-Star team.
