NORTH READING — Last week, the Cape Ann League field hockey coaches selected their All-Star team. They had a first team and second team for both the Kinney and Baker Division.
Two North Reading players were named to the CAL Kinney Division first team while two more made the second team.
The two Hornets to make the first team were senior co-captains Ava Czarnota and Rees Lord. Czarnota, a forward, led the team in points as she had 10 goals and six assists.
Lord spearheaded the midfield.
It is the second year in a row both girls made the first team All-Stars.
Emma Borland and Paige Thibedeau both made the second team Kinney All-Stars.
It is the second year on the second team for Borland. The senior co-captain goalie gave up 24 goals in 10 games as she had a .750 save percentage.
Thibedeau, a senior forward, had four goals and a team-high seven assists as this was her first time named to the team.
“All four represented the team very well,” said Hornets head coach Andrea Slaven, who just completed her fourth year at the helm. “Not only did they bring the best of themselves to the field, but they also brought out the best in their teammates.”
For the second year in a row, Slaven was named the CAL Kinney Division Coach of the Year.
Along with the four All-Stars, the Hornets will lose three other seniors: Morgan Majeski (forward), Morgan Craig (forward), Brianna Guidebeck (forward) and Amelia Milano (defenseman).
Majeski, another captain, had seven goals and one assist.
“The seniors continued our rebuilding program,” said Slaven. “They all got a taste of the tournament last year and they were mentally and physically prepared this season despite the virus that changed the season. I was proud of them and will miss them.”
The Hornets finished at 5-3-2 overall this year playing only a Cape Ann League schedule. North Reading came in second place to Newburyport in the CAL Kinney division.
The league was going to have a league tournament after the season but that was scrapped due to too many schools in the league being in the “Red” area due to the Covid-19 crisis.
The Hornets are slated to return 13 veterans next year.
“We have some experienced players coming back next year so I am excited for it,” said Slaven. “I hope we can have a normal year next season.”
