NORTH READING — The Cape Ann League volleyball coaches recently met to select their First and Second team All-Stars. One North Reading High player made the First Team while another one was selected for the Second Team.

The Hornet named to the first team was Abby Gerber. The junior, in her second year on the team after moving from California last year, made her first-ever post-season squad.

Gerber, a setter, was first on the team in service aces (77) and assists (332). She was second in digs with 186 and third in blocks with 11 and kills with 83.

The co-captain was also the team’s iron-woman playing every point this fall.

“She is a great all-around player,” stated Hornets head coach Mike Milone. “She is also a natural leader for us. She is the type who hates seeing the ball hitting the floor.”

Rose Morelli made the CAL Second-Team All-Stars as it was her first postseason honor as well. The senior captain, who was the libero, led the Hornets in serve percentage. She had a receive rating of 1.85 which was best on the team and a 472 serve-receive number which is one of the highest in the CAL.

She led the team in digs with 253 and was second in assist with 24. Morelli also had 24 total service aces.

“She was a rock for us,” said Milone, as Morelli was on the varsity for two seasons. “She was steady, smart and the leader of our defense.”

With the new power rankings implemented this year by the MIAA ,the Hornets qualified for the Division 3 state tournament as the CAL is one of the top leagues in the state. They ended up losing at Austin Prep, 3-1, in the first round back on Nov. 4.

North Reading finished with an overall record of 6-13. Late in the season, the CAL was split into the Kinney and Baker Divisions.

The Hornets went 4-10-1 in the league finishing in 5th place in the CAL Kinney Division.
