NORTH READING — Last Wednesday, on a cool and cloudy afternoon, the North Reading Hornet cross country teams hosted Masco for their final regular season contest of the season.

The Lady Hornets decided that, it being Senior Day and all, it would be a fine time to make some history.

Led once again by a course record effort by senior captain Lindsay MacLellan, the Hornets defeated Masco 25-31, which was the first victory over Masco in 45 years.

“To say I am proud of their efforts today is an understatement,” said Hornet head coach Ryan Spinney. “The girls ran their finest races of the season and it paid off in spades. The smiles and pride in their efforts afterwards made the race a victory, regardless of the score. To be able to celebrate a historic victory like this on Senior Day makes it even more special.”

MacLellan crushes her course record; Butler comes up big

Lindsay MacLellan once again cruised to the victory as she bested the field by nearly 2:30, broking her own course record by 10 seconds in a time of 16:34. MacLellan finished the regular season campaign undefeated and is a clear favorite to repeat as the Cape Ann League Open champion on Saturday, October 26.

Following MacLellan was freshman Annalise Butler who pushed ahead late in the race to take 2nd overall in a time of 18:57. Masco took 3rd and 4th but sophomore Abigail McLaughlin and senior captain Ali Grasso ran extremely tough races to snag 5th and 6th overall in times of 19:39 and 19:41 respectively. Masco took places 7-10 but senior Lauren Sullivan had her best race of the year and took 11th overall in a time of 20:44 to seal the victory for the Hornets. Following close behind to put the exclamation point on the victory were freshman Alyssa Cassarino (12th, 20:55) and senior Elena Cogan (20th, 22:01) who both ran personal bests on the home course.

“Annalise, Abigail, Ali, Lauren, Alyssa and Elena all had absolutely tremendous races today,” said Spinney. “They all stepped up and pushed themselves to run great races.”

Senior captain Lauren Meaney (25th, 22:58), senior Samantha Galvin (27th, 23:31), senior Kaitlyn Lehane (37th, 24:36), senior Isabella Raso (38th, 24:37) and sophomore Stephanie Stringer (39th, 24:40) rounded out the Hornet attack. The victory gives the Hornets a final record of 1-3 on the season in the Kinney Division and a total record of 1-5.

“Don’t be fooled by the record, this team is just peaking at the right time and we will be in the mix at the CAL Meet and at the state level,” said Spinney.

Boys fall despite strong effort

A talented Masco squad defeated the Hornet boys by a score of 19-42. Masco took the first three spots which sealed the victory for the Chieftains. Senior captain Andrew DeBenedetto took 4th overall in 15:44 and was the first Hornet across the line.

Junior captain Jack Murphy took 5th in a time of 16:12. Following DeBenedetto and Murphy was sophomore Anthony Petrosino (12th, 16:52), freshman Nick Fabrizio (15th, 17:25), junior Frank Cassarino (17:27), senior Chris Nearing (19th, 17:44) and junior Nick Rinaldi (23rd, 18:28) rounded out the top seven for the Hornets.

“Masco is a talented team and our division is extremely competitive this year,” said Spinney. “We compete against the elite teams in the state and today was certainly no different. We competed hard and just fell short today. Tip of the cap to Masco, they ran very well.”

The other Hornet competitors included junior PJ Menis (24th, 18:37), senior Matt McGotty (26th, 18:57), sophomore Nick Doucette (28th, 19:08), freshman Ben Meier (34th, 19:38), senior captain Nick O’Donnell (36th, 19:50), junior Zach Baker (37th, 19:50), junior Devin Adams (38th, 20:06), junior Erik Wieselquist (43rd, 21:54), junior Adam Zecher (44th, 21:59), senior Ben Elis (45th, 22:18), junior Kyle Moore (48th, 23:55) and senior Erik Doucette (51st, 26:17). The Hornets fell to 0-4 in the Kinney Division and finished the regular season with a 1-5 record overall.
