NORTH READING — On Monday afternoon, the North Reading High girls’ lacrosse team recorded its first win of the season as they beat guest Lynnfield by a final of 13-8. The Hornets evened their record at 1-1 overall.

“I was really proud of the team” said Hornets head coach Matt Costello. “We played that all for one style that we want.”

With a solid second quarter, the Hornets were able to take an 8-3 halftime advantage.

“We got into a good rhythm,” pointed out Costello as the Hornets scored the final six goals of the first half.

The second half was even as both teams scored five times while North Reading was able to keep the Pioneers (0-1) at bay.

Mia Pittore led the team in goals with four while Brianne Slattery led the squad in points with five on three goals and a pair of assists.

Jenna DiNapoli scored twice while Faith Newton had a goal and two assists. Audrey Buckley, Eviana MacInnis and Kiley Rosenthal all scored once. Rosenthal also had one assist.

Emma Borland improved to 1-1 in goal as she made seven saves.

On defense, Marykate Lundy had a team-high five ground balls and caused four Pioneer turnovers.

In the season opener on May 7, the Hornets fell to visiting Pentucket, 19-12, in a high-scoring affair.

“We struggled turning the ball over,” admitted Costello.” We were playing too much defense.”

The Sachems controlled the territorial play and peppered Borland with 34 shots as she made 15 saves.

“Emma played very well,” said Costello.

The Sachems led 12-6 at the half as the Hornets were never able to close that gap in the second half.

Slattery had four goals and one assist while DiNapoli and Pittore both scored twice. Newton had one goal and one assist while Buckley had the other tally.

North Reading will look to go to 2-1 next Tuesday night (May 18) as they visit Ipswich. That game will start at 6 pm.
