NORTH READING — On Apr. 6, the NRHS girls’ lacrosse team won the Pepe-Samson trophy at rival Lynnfield, 13-6, for their first CAL win of the year. North Reading led, 5-3, at the half and slowly pulled away in the second stanza.

Brianne Slattery had a monster game with a career-high seven goals and one assist.

“She was confident and aggressive,” pointed out Costello. “She won draws as well.”

Faith Newton and Jenna Mahoney both scored twice while Audrey Buckley and Shea Tully both scored one time. Megan Slattery had a team-high two assists.

Kaitlyn Supple turned back six Pioneer shots on net.

It was a rough day for the Hornets on Tuesday afternoon as they were topped by guest Pentucket by a count of 24-4. With that loss, the Hornets fell to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the Cape Ann League.

“They have a lot of returning players from last year,” pointed out Hornets head coach Matt Costello. “They took their game to another level.”

The Sachems came in second place in the CAL Kinney Division last year with the lone loss this season coming to the defending league champions, Newburyport.

Pentucket led this one 17-2 at the half.

The four Hornet goals were scored by Mia Pittore, Audrey Buckley, Brianne Slattery and Faith Newton. Megan Slattery had one assist.

Goalie Kaitlyn Supple, who was under heavy duress, made four saves to fall to 2-2 in net. She was replaced later in the second half by sophomore Dylan Ominsky who made her varsity debut.

The next game for the Hornets will be on Thursday as they visit Manchester-Essex. That game will start at 4:30 p.m.

North Reading will then have the school vacation week off next week as they will return to action on Apr. 25 at home against Georgetown. That game will start at 4:30 p.m.
