NORTH READING — It was a successful Senior Day game for the North Reading girls’ lacrosse team on May 1 as they beat Winthrop, 9-2, in a non-league contest.

“This was, by far, our best game of the season,” stated head coach Matt Costello, whose squad led 5-2 at halftime. “We showed amazing energy all game long.”

Lindsey Rosenthal had a career-high four goal to go with one assist to lead the attack. Addison Hajj scored twice and had one assist while Alaina Driscoll, the team’s top goal scorer, had one goal and one assist.

The other two Hornet goals were scored by Abby McInerney and Makenzie Murphy.

Kaitlyn Supple turned back nine Viking shots on goal.

Before the game, Supple, Grace Terranova and team manager, Riley Lanzi, were honored.

Terranova led the team in ground balls with four.

Costello knew his team had an uphill battle last Friday as they hosted mighty Newburyport. In the first meeting, the Clippers won 15-1 on April 3.

This time, the defending Division 3 state champions won 16-1.

“They are even stronger than when we played them the first time,” pointed out Costello. “They are a well-oiled machine.”

With the loss, the Hornets’ record dipped to 4-7 overall and 1-6 in the Cape Ann League. Newburyport, meanwhile, improved to 8-1 overall and 6-0 in the CAL.

The Clippers led this game 12-0 at the half.

Hajj scored the only Hornet goal in the fourth quarter as they were able to avoid the shutout.

This was the Hornets’ One Love Game for relationship health awareness.

On May 10, the Hornets visit Essex Tech at 4 p.m. up in Danvers. They then travel to Nantucket the next day for a 1 p.m. start.

On May 14, NR returns to CAL play as they host Triton at 4 p.m.

North Reading is looking for the season sweep against Triton as they won the first meeting, 11-2, back on April 1.

The Hornets headed into this week seeded 23rd in the MIAA Division 4 power rankings. At the end of the season, the top 32 schools automatically qualify for the state tournament.
