NORTH READING — The NRHS girls’ tennis team is 2-2 in the first four matches of the 2021 season. Three of their matches have ended 3-2 including both of their losses.
North Reading beat Pentucket 3-2 in their season opener on May 6.
Junior Elizabeth Grant won 6-1, 6-4 at second singles while junrio Soultana Tsparlis stepped right in for regular third singles start Gina Campagna and won easily 6-1, 6-3.
After a comeback attempt at first doubles including junior Lexi Licciardi and sophomore Mary Bonzagni playing in her first varsity match, second doubles stepped up to help account for the final win. Sophomore sensations Alyssa Bradley and Chloe Florez breezed through that matchup, 6-1, 6-1.
The Hornets dropped a close 3-2 match to Lynnfield on May 10. Grant accounted for the North Reading’s only singles winning a three-set thriller at second singles 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The second doubles team of Bradley and Florez also got the win in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
North Reading improved to 2-1 with a win against Amesbury on May 14. It was their third consecutive road match to start the season.
Senior captain Ava Czarnota, who matches up with every opponent’s best player earned her first win of the season with a 6-3, 6-3 score.
Grant improved to 3-0 at second singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win.
Campagna beat her Amesbury opponent 6-1, 6-1 at third singles to earn the singles sweep.
Florez and Bradley remained undefeated with a 6-1, 6-0 win at second doubles.
The Hornets fell to Ipswich in their home opener on Monday 3-2. They hosted Triton on Wednesday after press time and stay at home on Friday for a matchup against Newburyport at 4 p.m. Full recaps will appear at a later date.
