AMESBURY — On May 16, the NRHS girls’ tennis team clinched a state tournament berth after picking up their eighth win of the season with a hard fought 3-2 road victory over the Amesbury Indians.

Junior Kylie Scher picked up a very easy win at third singles 6-1 6-1. At first singles, senior tri-captain Tia Campagna won in a hard fought three-setter 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Ava Czarnota continued her impressive season with a straight set victory at second singles 7-6, 6-2.

Both doubles teams suffered straight set defeats. Senior tri-captain Megan Landers and junior Jillian Coveney fell 6-1, 7-5 and senior tri-captain Alexa Galuppo and junior Haley MacIntyre lost 6-1 6-2.  

Maul Malden 5-0

On Thursday, the Hornets hosted Malden and walloped the Golden Tornadoes 5-0. Head Coach Matt Tiberii sat all the seniors except Haley MacIntyre for the match and went with a lineup for the future.

The highlight of the match came at second doubles where sophomore Lucie Wilson and junior Maddie Rutherford won a three-set thriller 2-6, 6-4, 11-9 in their first varsity start. They played a 10 point tiebreaker in the third set because the match was already decided.

Ava Czarnota stepped in at first singles and won without dropping a single game 6-0 6-0. At second singles Kylie Scher also won in impressive fashion 6-0, 6-1 and Jillian Coveney took her match at third singles 6-2, 6-4. Haley MacIntyre and junior Sydney Davis paired up at first doubles and won in convincing fashion 6-1, 6-0.

The Hornets hosted Austin Prep on Wednesday after press time and Bishop Fenwick on Thursday.
