NORTH READING — The girls’ track and field program took down Amesbury on Wednesday, April 19 with an impressive 108 to 36 victory and followed that up with an 87-58 win over Pentucket on Monday to improve to 4-0 on the season.

Against Amesbury, the Hornets won 15 of 17 events contested and took 2nd and 3rd in the 100 meters and discus throw to come up with a dominating win.

Leading the team to victory was sophomore Kayla Budny who had an impressive day across the board, winning three individual events and as part of the 4×100 meter relay. She started the day with a win in both the long jump (15’ 9”) and triple Jump (33’ 10”), which were both personal best performances. She then led off the winning 4 x 100 meter relay team which won in a time of 52.6 seconds by running a sub 13 second lead off leg. To cap off her already impressive day she ran a blistering face 26.62 second 200 meters, which ranks her 8th all time in school history.

The trio of Katelyn Gorgenyi, Ashley Rabbit and Madison Vant also had a stand out day, considering they each competed in five events throughout the day in order to attempt for qualifying marks for the state championship pentathlon meet. All three had to contest the high jump, shot put, and 800 meters along with two additional events that they typically compete in.

Gorgenyi won the 100 meter hurdles (15.20 seconds) and the shot put (31’ 10”) but was also able to pick up two third places in the 800 meters (2:51.1) and triple jump (33’ 4”). Katelyn’s performance in the shot put ranks her 10th all time in school history.

Rabbit won the 400 Meter Hurdles (1:12.4) and took second in the Pole Vault (9’6”). Ashley’s time in the 400 meter hurdles ranks her 8th all time in school history and her pole vault ranks her 6th all time in school history. Vant won the Javelin Throw (94’ 5”) and took second in the Long Jump (15’ 8.5”).

Other event winners at the meet were as follows: Annie MacLellan (One Mile = 5:48.7), Abigail Lilley (High Jump = 4’ 6”), Julia Thorstad (800 Meters = 2:29.6), Margaret Fortin (400 Meters = 1:06.42), Analise Butler (Two Mile = 12:46.1), Jessica Hill (Pole Vault = 10’ 0), the 4×100 meter relay (52.6 seconds) made up of Kayla Budny, Ella Mazzei, Ava McIntyre, and Jessica Hill and the 4×400 meter relay (4:31.63) made up of Karleigh Budny, Abigail Lilley, Annie MacLellan, and Julia Thorstad. Hill’s pole vault ranks her 5th all time in school history.

It was an overall great performance from all athletes in a meet that saw the majority of the team hitting personal best marks.

The Hornets competed on the road against Pentucket on Monday in a clash of the only undefeated teams in the league. Both teams came into the meet 3-0 and the Hornets left 4-0 to remain the top team in the Cape Ann League. Pentucket took eight events while the Hornets took seven events. It was the depth of the Hornet team that allowed them to win in decisive fashion with a final score of 87-58.

Senior captain Katelyn Gorgenyi was the standout performer of the meet winning four individual events (Long Jump, Shot Put, 100 Meters, 200 Meters). Her 18’ 3” leap in the long jump set a new school record, besting the previous mark of 18’ 1.5” set by Christina Salow in 1989. Her 12.2 hand time and 25.1 hand time in the 100 meters and 200 meters rank her 2nd all time in school history behind Alexis Capozzi who set the marks in 2008.

Leading into the 4 x 400 meter relay the discus throw and javelin throw had not been completed and the score stood at North Reading 64 to Pentucket 58 and the Hornets needed at least 73 to win.

The key to victory was how the Hornets outscored Pentucket in the throwing events 26-1. Emma Mini took second in the Shot Put behind Gorgenyi for a 8-1 score in the event. The Hornets swept the Discus led by Sam Magner (81’ 0”), Emma Mini (67’ 2”),and Kristina Valenti (65’ 2”). The Hornets also swept the Javelin led by Madison Vant (98’ 7”), Sam Magner (74’ 7”) and Kristina Valenti (70’ 8”).

Other scorers included the following: 400 Meter Hurdles (Ashley Rabbitt and Madison Vant), Triple Jump (Georgia Robarts and Kayla Budny), High Jump (Ella Monteleone), Pole Vault (Jessica Hill and Ashley Rabbitt), One Mile (Annie MacLellan), 100 Meter Hurdles (Ella Monteleone and Ashley Rabbitt), 800 Meters (Julia Thorstad and Annie MacLellan), 400 Meters (Margaret Fortin), Two Mile (Annalise Butler), 200 Meters (Ava McIntyre), 4 x 400 Meter Relay (Kayla Budny, Madison Vant, Margaret Fortin and Julia Thorstad). The Hornets host Newburyport today (Thursday, May 27) at 5 p.m.
