NORTH READING — North Reading High field hockey coach Mikayla Allen gave out three awards at the team’s end-of-season banquet last month at the Moose Lodge.

The team MVP Award went to senior midfielder Alyse Mutti. Mutti was a Cape Ann League First-Team All-Star this year. She had seven points with three goals and four assists.

Alaina Driscoll took home the Coaches Award. Driscoll, a junior midfielder, scored six goals to go with two assists.

The Unsung Hero Award went to senior defenseman Morgan Davis.

It was another good season for the Hornets as they reached the MIAA Division 3 quarterfinals before losing, 3-2, to guest Bedford to end the year at 14-4-2 overall.

In the CAL, they finished 12-3 as they were the CAL Kinney Division co-champions along with Newburyport.

“We had an incredible run,” stated Allen, who just finished her second year at the helm. “I was very proud of what this team accomplished and this was the first time we have won the league title in 50 years.”

Along with Mutti and Davis, the team will also lose seniors Maddie Lambert (defenseman), Eva Hanegraaff (forward), Anna Abruzzese (defenseman) and Ellie Moberg (forward).

Mutti, Lambert and Moberg were the captains this fall. Lambert and Moberg were also CAL Second-Team All-Stars.

“This senior class is a tough one to lose,” admitted Allen, who was named the CAL Kinney Division Coach of the Year. “They were very coachable and great kids on and off the field. They also worked hard with the junior class to prepare them for next year.”

All six 12th-graders were starters.

Next fall, the Hornets are slated to return 13 veterans and should be in the hunt for the CAL Kinney crown again.

“I am excited for next year,” said Allen. “We will have a team with good experience.”
