LYNNFIELD — The North Reading High softball team wrapped up its regular season on May 24 as they visited rival Lynnfield looking to sweep the season series.
However, thanks to a late seventh-inning rally, the Pioneers were able to upset the Hornets 7-6.
Things looked good for the locals as they were leading, 6-3, heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. Lynnfield was then able to plate four runs with the game winner coming on a fielder’s choice as the play at home plate was too late seeing off a huge celebration by the home team.
With the defeat, the Hornets ended the regular season at 13-5 overall and 11-3 in the Cape Ann League. They placed second in the CAL Kinney Division behind Triton.
Lynnfield, meanwhile, improved to 11-9 overall and 6-8 in the CAL.
The Hornets earned the No. 8 seed in the Div. 3 state tournament. They will host No. 25 Oakmont Regional (9-10) in the first round, date and time unknown as of press time. The winner will play the winner of No. 9 Bishop Fenwick (12-7) vs. No. 24 Lowell Catholic (10-6) in the Round of 16.
