NORTH READING — Without a State Championship or CAL Open Championship contested this season, the Cape Ann League All Star honor carries a greater significance this year as a recognition of athlete performance.
North Reading’s track and field program has athletes achieve this honor every year. However, this year the Hornets had athletes achieve CAL All Star honors in 10 of the 12 events contested. In the two events the Hornets did not achieve the honor (55 meter dash and 300 meters) they had multiple athletes ranked 4th-6th place which would score points in a league championship.
On paper, based on the performance list of the season and how coaches distributed their athletes (athletes can not be listed in more than three events, which is the maximum number of events they could have contested at the championship meet) North Reading would have been the heavy favorites at the Cape Ann League Championship. Based on the performance list, the top teams would have been Newburyport (56 points), Pentucket (72 points), and North Reading (108 points).
Achieving top honors for the Cape Ann League was Katelyn Gorgenyi, who was named the Athlete of the Year. Gorgenyi received CAL All Star honors in the 55 meter hurdles, long jump and 4×400 meter relay, being ranked first in the league in all three events. She was also ranked first in the 55 meters and 4×200 Meter Relay, 3rd in the shot put and 5th in the high jump.
The Hornets were also voted by the coaches in the league for the Sportsmanship Award, which is another honor this team should be proud of.
