GEORGETOWN — It has been a good start to the season for the North Reading High volleyball team as they beat host Georgetown, 3-1, on Tuesday.
With the win, the Hornets improved to 2-0 overall and in the Cape Ann League.
North Reading won set one, 25-16, and set two, 26-24. The Royals won the third set, 25-22, but the Hornets closed it out in the forth set winning 25-19.
“We started off real strong,” said Hornets head coach Mike Milone. “I did a lot of subbing with all 13 girls playing and we lost some of that rhythm.”
Standout players, according to Milone, were freshman setter Willow Koepke and senior co-captain, Shayla Alley (middle hitter)
“Alley played two good sets,” pointed out Milone.
In the season opener on Sept. 8, the Hornets beat visiting Pentucket 3-1. The Panthers won the first set, 25-23. However, the Hornets won the next three sets, 25-16, 25-18 and 25-12.
“They have a couple of very good players who helped them win that first set,” said Milone. “We were then able to come on strong after that.”
Junior outside hitters Talia Ranieri and Sammi Mutti led the way for the Hornets against the Panthers.
North Reading’s next match will be on Friday as they visit rival Lynnfield. The Hornets then host Arlington Catholic in a non-league match on Sept. 18.
Both matches will start at 5:30 p.m.
