NORTH READING — It was a successful season opener for the North Reading High volleyball team on Sept. 8 as they edged visiting Georgetown by a final of 3-2.

The Hornets won the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-9. However, the Royals fought back winning the next two sets, 25-9 and 25-16.

North Reading was then able to regroup in the final set winning 15-6.

“We got a little nervous and Georgetown was able to get on a little roll midway through,” said North Reading head coach Mike Milone. “I was able to play everybody and we were able to recover to win that final set.”

Senior Erin Scanlon led the team in kills with 14 while junior captain Abby Gerber led the squad in assists with 31.

Senior co-captain Rose Morelli led the team in digs with 30 and her and Geber led the Hornets in service aces with three each.

The Hornets hosted Lynnfield at home on Wednesday after press time. Their next match is Friday night as they go to Hamilton-Wenham. They then visit Newburyport on Tuesday, Sept. 21.
