JOHN FRIBERG (Deanna Castro Photo)

The following is a letter in a series honoring Hornet sports photographer and NRHS Hall-of-Famer John Friberg who passed away on July 28. Please forward any letters, stories or favorite photos to: sports@wakefielditem.com.

North Reading High School lost a good friend in the passing of Mr. John Friberg. I had the good fortune of meeting John through his two wonderful children, Ali and Jay, who passed through North Reading High School during my time as principal. John and his wife Chris did a fine job raising their children, instilling in both of them a humble and unassuming nature despite their many athletic and scholastic accomplishments coupled with their leadership skills that made their high school a better place.

I am most grateful for the many photographs that John took of the student athletes of NRHS, most especially those that graced the halls of the high school. These photographs preserved many great memories of the decent young people that found their true selves through good and fun and spirited competition.

I felt a deep loss when I learned of John’s passing, for he truly was a decent man who sought very little and gave so much. The community of North Reading will forever hold a very special place in my heart for the many years that I had the privilege of serving its school district, and this is largely due to the many fine people–of all ages–with whom I had the good fortune of meeting…Mr. John Friberg is certainly a man who tops that list. He will be missed.

May God bless John’s memory and his family, and may the many good memories of a life well-lived, in service to others sustain, his dear wife and children during this most difficult time.

Jon C. Bernard,

Superintendent (Retired)
