Retired nurse who loved spending time in Maine with her husband

NORTH READING — Claire Janice (McMahon) Ryland passed away peacefully on November 6, 2022 in North Reading with her family by her side. She was 97 years old.

She was born to John and Alice McMahon in 1925 in Brighton, where she grew up with her sisters and brothers.

She met James Frederick Ryland and was married in Reading in 1948 at 22 years old. Together they raised four children in North Reading. Claire also studied nursing and worked at New England Memorial Hospital. After retiring, Claire and Fred spent their days in a beautiful home by the ocean in Camden, Maine with their beloved dog T-Bone. They spent winters visiting their lifelong friends in Flagler Beach, Florida.

Claire Ryland was preceded by her husband Fred Ryland, her daughter Kathleen Ryland Harmon, and her son Thomas Ryland. She is survived by her son Mark Ryland and her daughter and son-in-law Susan and Paul Magliozzi, as well as her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 10 from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by an 11 a.m. funeral service at the Croswell Funeral Home, 19 Bow Street, North Reading. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in North Reading. Memorial donations may be made in her memory to the charity of one’s choice.
