A humble man who enjoyed the simple things in life
NORTH READING — Lawrence C. “Sonny” Dhimitri, 85, of North Reading, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, surrounded by his family after a lengthy illness.
He was the beloved husband of Judith A. (Fioccoprile) Dhimitri, with whom he shared nearly 56 years of marriage. Born and raised in the Brickyard section of Lynn, he was the son of the late Pandeli and Polixini (Pitush) Dhimitri. He had lived in North Reading for the past 20 years.
Sonny was a graduate of Lynn Classical High School, class of 1956, and attended the Bentley School of Accounting. He served in the United States Army Reserve. He was a dedicated and loyal employee for 37 years at General Electric, Aircraft Division, until his retirement.
He routinely enjoyed time with a close-knit group of lifelong friends at the Italian American Citizens Club and the 50 Club in Lynn. He was an avid sports fan, enjoyed bowling, a good game of gin or cribbage, and an afternoon at the horse track, especially trips to Saratoga Springs. Sonny was a humble man. He enjoyed the simple things in life, a dry martini, his wife’s Italian cooking, and an occasional surprise romantic getaway. But most of all he enjoyed his family, especially spending time with his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two children: Kristina Benecke and her husband Kevin, and Kenneth Dhimitri and his wife Christina; his grandchildren: Eric, Luke, and Mia Benecke, and Joseph, Joshua, and Jack Dhimitri; as well as many sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his grandson, Michael Benecke, and his siblings, James, Sophie, Matthew, and Loretta Dhimitri.
His funeral was held on Tuesday, October 29 at 11 a.m. at the Solimine Funeral Home, 426 Broadway (Rte. 129), Lynn. Burial followed at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Lynn. Calling hours for relatives and friends were held at the funeral home on Monday, October 28 from 4-8 p.m. Donations may be made in his memory to Care Dimensions, 75 Sylvan St., Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923 or giving.caredimensions.org.
