Korean War veteran was a talented woodworker, photographer, mechanical engineer and devoted family man
PEABODY — Richard F. “Mac” MacWhorter, 90, beloved husband of 67 years to Marianne (Ricci) MacWhorter, passed away on Thursday, May 4, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. Born on October 7, 1932, he was the beloved son of the late Phillip and Jessie (Floyd) MacWhorter. He was a longtime resident of North Reading prior to moving to Peabody.
Mac was born and raised in Winthrop. After graduating from Winthrop High School, he served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Upon his discharge from the service, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Tufts University and his master’s degree from Northeastern University. For many years, he worked as a mechanical engineer for the General Electric in Lynn. In addition, Mac was a talented woodworker and photographer. He tackled any problem with his vast knowledge. Although he was quiet, he was always the first person to call when guidance and wisdom was needed in a situation. He had an appreciation for learning. He made sure that his children and grandchildren received all the education they desired.
One of Mac’s favorite places was his vacation home in York Beach, Maine. He built this home so his family could spend time together in the summer, also known as everyone’s “happy place.” He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, on the beach. You could also find him puttering around the house, tending to his garden or watching the Red Sox or the Celtics with a glass of wine.
Mac was a kind, loving and thoughtful man and will be missed and remembered by the many lives he touched. He was devoted to his wife, children, grandchildren, family and many close friends.
He was the devoted father of Cathi Mabon and her husband Jack of North Andover and Karen Brown and her husband Gary of Salem, N.H. He was the cherished grandfather of Christopher and Michael Mabon of North Andover; Jamie Baroni and her husband Luke of Bedford, N.H.; Kasey Hickey and her husband Ryan of Hampton, N.H.; and Kylie Brown and her boyfriend Kevin Bucher of Medford. He was the loving great-grandfather of Aria and Zoey Baroni; and Brynn and Colson Hickey and the beloved brother of the late Paul MacWhorter and the late Marion Vaughn. Mac leaves many loving nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are cordially invited to visit with Mac’s family on Thursday, May 11 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Immediately following the visitation, a memorial service to celebrate Mac’s life will be held at 12 p.m.
