NORTH READING — The NRHS girls’ basketball team hosted a four-team Holiday Tournament this week.

The Hornets beat Revere 43-32 on Monday night for their first win of the season, before falling to an undefeated Wakefield team 55-28 in the championship game.

North Reading had two players named to the six-player All-Tournament team: senior captain Rose Morelli and junior Brianne Slattery.

Slattery (14 points) and Morelli (9 points) led the offense in their win over Revere.

The key stretch of the game was a 16-3 run in the second quarter that allowed North Reading to open up a 27-9 halftime lead.

The Hornets continued to play good defense in the second half as they forced Revere into 36 turnovers in the game.

Senior captain Kayla Imbriano provided an important contribution with solid defense, 4 steals, 2 assists and 3 rebounds.

The Hornets had a hard time getting into rhythm against a talented Wakefield squad. The Warriors caused plenty of trouble with their intense ball pressure which led to multiple fast breaks and a 29-14 halftime advantage.

Slattery and sophomore Bella Cannalonga both had 7 points. Junior Sophia Parrett added 5 points.

The Hornets fell to 1-4 with that loss. North Reading has played a tough schedule so far, something that head coach Bob Romeo knows will only help them as they get into the heart of their league slate, starting on Tuesday, Jan. 4 in Ipswich at 6:30 p.m.

“We had a difficult schedule to start the season and while sitting at 1-4 is disappointing, it is not surprising,” said Romeo. “I fully expect January to be a much better month for us.”
