ARLINGTON — In the first round of the Division 2 North State Tournament last Friday night, the North Reading High volleyball team lost at Arlington Catholic, 3-0. With that defeat, the 11th-seeded Hornets ended the year at 11-9.

Meanwhile, the sixth-seeded Cougars then won a road match against CAL champion Hamilton-Wenham, 3-1, on Monday night in the quarterfinal round to improve to 18-4. A.C. took on host Melrose in the semifinals on Wednesday night (results not available at press time).

Against the Hornets, the Cougars, a team out of the Catholic Central League, won game one, 25-12, and game two, 25-15. The Hornets played much better in game three but were edged, 25-22.

“They are the strongest team we have played this year,” acknowledged North Reading head coach Mike Milone. “They play defense really well and they have a very solid setter. They never allowed us to get into a stride.”

Noel Riley led the Hornets in kills with seven while Abby D’Orlando had eight assists. D’Orlando, a senior captain, also had six service points including three aces.

Lauren Gulbicki had a team-high eight blocks.

“I was proud of our effort,” said Milone.
