NORTH READING – The NRHS fall sports teams closed out their seasons with the annual Sports Awards Night recently, always a special night for the athletes and their families.

In addition to the traditional letter awards, over two dozen special awards were distributed to the members of the nine sports teams.

Fall Varsity Special Awards

Football

Coaches’ Award: John Merullo. Unsung Hero Award: Andrew Jaroncyk. MVP Award (two plaques): Matthew McCarthy and Nicolas O’Connell.

Boys’ Soccer

Coaches Award: Michael Driscoll. Unsung Hero Award: Matthew Ashness. MVP Award: Anthony Tramontozzi.

Girls’ Soccer

Coaches’ Award: Anna Tayas. Unsung Hero: Juliette Nadeau. MVP Award: Katerina Hassapis.

Volleyball

Coaches´ Award: Lea Diamantides. Unsung Hero Award: Julia Crugnale. MVP Award: Ciera Mastascusa.

Golf

Coaches’ Award: Logan Stansbury. Unsung Hero Award: Joseph Fitzgerald. MVP Award: Ryan Delaney.

Cheerleading

Coaches’ Award: Olivia Senneville. Unsung Hero Award: Victoria Angelesco. MVP Award: Jenna O’Leary.

Field Hockey: Coaches Award: Julia McDonald and Elizabeth Carlson. Unsung Hero Award: Sarah Sabella. MVP Award: Julia Perrone.

Cross Country Girls’: Coaches’ Award: Catherine O’Brien. Unsung Hero Award: Carly Swartz. MVP Award: Julia Tatone.

Cross Country Boys’: Coaches Award: Justin Bruzzese. Unsung Hero Award: Noah Spicer. MVP Award: Brendan Carter.

Varsity Football

The 2015 varsity team finished with an 8–3 record and qualified for post season play for the first time in 30 years. Matthew McCarthy was named Offensive Player of the Year in the division and first team All Star. Bobby O’Donnell was named Offensive Lineman of the Year in the division and a first team All Star. John Merullo and Nic O’Connell were both named first team All Stars and David Smith and Nicholas Copelas received Honorable Mention.

Varsity Boys’ Soccer

The boys soccer team finished with a 7–5–7 record and were first round participants in the MIAA tournament. The team had five CAL All Stars: Anthony Tramontozzi, first team; Cameron Davis, Kilian Daly, Michael Driscoll and Nicholas Govostes.

Varsity Girls’ Soccer

The girls soccer team finished with a 17-4-2 record and were MIAA Tournament Division 3 North Champs for the first time. The team had five CAL All Stars: Katerina Hassapis, CAL Player of the Year; Jillian Comeau and Katerina Hassapis, (both first team all stars); and Jessica Muise, Marissa Zarella and Katherine Welch. Hassapis was named a Boston Globe All Scholastic and Coach Sean Killeen was named Boston Globe Division 3 Coach of the Year.

Varsity Girls’ Volleyball

The team finished with a 8–10 record, narrowly missing the MIAA tournament by a single game. The team had two All Stars: Ciera Mastascusa, All Star and All League, and Tristan Hoffman.

The team finished as CAL Co-Champions and made the MIAA Tournament. Brian McAuliffe was named CAL Coach of the Year and Ryan Delaney was named as CAL first team All Star.

The team won second place in the Cape Ann League Competition and third place in the Regionals. Katie Heffernan was named All League.

Cross Country

The team won the Eastern Mass. Cross Country Meet held at the Wrentham Development Center. The boys team won the Kinney Division Sportsmanship Award.
