NORTH READING – The NRHS fall sports teams closed out their seasons with the annual sports awards night recently, always a special night for the athletes and their families.
In addition to the traditional letter awards, over two dozen special awards were distributed to the members of the nine sports teams.
Fall varsity special awards
Football varsity
Coaches Award Robert O’Donnell. Unsung Hero: Robert Donohue. MVP Award: Matthew McCarthy.
Boys’ varsity soccer
Coaches Award: Zachary Robarts. Unsung Hero: Griffin Elis. MVP Award: Liam Rutherford.
Girls’ varsity soccer
Coaches Award, (two plaques): Meredith Griffin and Kristina Copelas. Unsung Hero: Giana Moscaritolo. MVP Award: Katerina Hassapis.
Volleyball varsity
Coaches Award: Seren Ventullo. Unsung Hero Award: Abigail D’Orlando. MVP Award: Jenna Forcellese.
Golf

Varsity Football
The 2016 football team finished with a 9-2 record and won the co-championship of the Cape Ann League Kinney (Large School) Division, the first Hornet team to win a grid title since 1980. The team came within one game of going to the Division 2A Super Bowl. Senior captain Matthew McCarthy was named CAL 2016 Most Valuable Player and set a new school record for touchdowns in a season. Robert O’Donnell was named CAL Defensive Player of the Year. McCarthy and O’Donnell were named to the CAL first team All Star team, along with fellow seniors John Merullo and Bob Donohue. Juniors Kyle Bythrow and Jack DeAngelo were named CAL second team all stars. McCarthy was named a Boston Herald All Scholastic Player.

The 2016 team finished 15-5-1. They entered the MIAA tournament as the fourth seed and came within a whisker of winning the whole thing, before falling to the Newburyport Clippers in shoot-out in the tournament finals.
