WAKEFIELD — The Fire Department would like to remind residents that it is now illegal to burn brush and yard waste, after firefighters responded to several incidents of illegal outside burning yesterday.

At 12:45 p.m., firefighters went to a New Salem Street address on the first instance of unauthorized outside burning. The other responses came at 7 p.m. for burning on Elm Street and at 8 p.m. on Ludlow Avenue. All three fires were extinguished by firefighters.

The Fire Department reminds residents that the legal burning season ended on Tuesday, May 1.

Firefighters responded to 17 calls yesterday, including eight for medical aid.

At 2:30 p.m. firefighters were dispatched to the northbound side of Route 128 near exit 39 for a two car crash. One driver was taken by ambulance to Winchester Hospital. The other driver refused medical attention. One of the vehicles had to be towed from the scene.

At 4:15 p.m. Wakefield Engine 2 responded under mutual aid to a six-alarm fire in Chelsea that involved three triple-decker residences on John Street in that city. Acting Lt. John Hurley, and firefighters Arthur Fennelly and Dan Paglia assisted at the scene of the fire until about 10:30 p.m. Over 100 firefighters from departments around the region battled the blaze.

In other public safety news, at about 10:45 a.m. police assisted motorists with the exchange of papers after a minor crash on Hanson Street.

Police assisted a motorist after a minor crash on Main Street yesterday at about 3:45 p.m. According to police, a 2011 Nissan Murano was exiting the Eastern Bank parking lot onto Main Street when it was rear-ended by another car that did not stop. The Nissan sustained a small dent on the rear bumper.

At about 5:30 p.m., police assisted with the paper exchange after another rear end crash in a parking lot on Main Street.

At about 8:30 last night, Wakefield PD’s K9 unit responded to motor vehicle stop on Route 128 south, near exit 42.

Police said that they had pulled a vehicle over for illegal window tint and became suspicious that drugs might be in the car, but none were found.
