WAKEFIELD — In 1946, Grietsen and Eva Oosterman opened Oosterman’s Rest Home at 93 Laurel St. in Melrose. Their mission was to provide aging area residents with quality care at affordable prices in a homelike environment.
Now, four generations and 70 years later, their great-granddaughter Kate Oosterman is carrying on the family tradition as Administrator of the Rest Homes.
According to Kate, “We’ve always believed that at Oosterman’s it was, “Our Family caring for Your Family” and that attitude has been passed down from generation to generation. Because we’re family owned and operated, we can provide a level of personal care that you just can’t get at those larger corporate owned facilities. We create a homey atmosphere for our residents. We know their names, we know what they like and don’t like. We celebrate their birthdays. Our staff works hard to make sure everyone feel like they’re part of one big happy family.”
The Melrose Rest Home is an original Victorian style house located near a park. It is co-ed and provides 25 residents with private and semi-private rooms. Included in the monthly costs is room and board, 3 home cooked meals daily, laundry, licensed medication administration, housekeeping and a variety of schedule activities.
“What we offer is a quality care alternative that’s in-between assisted living and nursing homes. We offer our residents lots of personal care at much more affordable prices.”
In 1957, the Oostermans purchased a second Rest Home in Wakefield. The Wakefield Rest Home is female only and provides care for women in a homelike setting. The Wakefield Rest Home also provides Respite and Hospice Care.
