MEMBERS of the Fifth Massachusetts Battery (E), Light Artillery, Army of the Potomac, set off a cannon on the South Common last weekend as part of their Civil War encampment demonstration of the training that took place at Camp Stanton in Lynnfield. According to historical accounts, "the roar of artillery and the deafening cannon" could be heard from the campground in the morning and at sunset. Located on both sides of the Newburyport Turnpike near Suntaug Lake, it opened as Camp Schuyler in 1861 and continued as Camp Houston through 1917 as a state National Guard mobilization camp, serving as the general rendezvous of recruits from nine counties. The encampment was part of the Historical Commission's Lynnfield 2014 bicentennial/tricentennial celebration.                            (Greg Pronevitz Photo)
