MELROSE — The Melrose High School gymnastic team started their season off on the right foot with back to back wins over Burlington, 136.6-134.95 and Wakefield, 134.85 to 118.3. At 2-0 Melrose is in the driver’s seat for another successful season as they look to regain their league title (having won 9 of their last 10).

They began their season on Jan. 6 against Burlington at the YMCA Gymnastics Center in Saugus and took a victory thanks in part to some very strong beam routines. Melrose’s topped Burlington in the event, 35.9-33.9. Leading the contingent was sophomore Shay Fennell (9.2) followed by Tania Dutra and Anna Pecci (both 9.0), Stephanie Dutra (8.7), Izzy Albuja (8.5) and Izzy Judware (8.1). Melrose pulled off solid routines in the bars but saw Burlington edge them in the event, 34.9-34.2. Topping Melrose in routine was Shay Fennell at 8.8 followed by Brooke Barriss at 8.6. Melrose, however, edged Burlington in the vault, 33.6-32.05 thanks to first place finish by Brooke Barriss. Also competing strong in the event was Lauren Cincotta (8.55) and Tania Dutra (8.45). While Melrose fell in the floor routine, it wasn’t enough to top their overall score. Melrose’s best floor performance came from Izzy Judware (8.35), Anna Pecci (8.25) and Brooke Norris (8.2).

Coming off the win, Melrose hosted Wakefield on Tuesday and enjoyed another victory, 134.85 to 118.3. Melrose’s strongest event was the vault, which was topped by Lauren Cincotta (8.9), followed closely by Brooke Barriss (8.8). Melrose also enjoyed a strong floor performance led by Anna Pecci (8.95). Pecci also led the team in the beam with a 8.6 score.

Melrose will look to extend their winning streak when they host Woburn Friday night at 7:15 p.m.
