LYNNFIELD — Lynnfield High boys’ tennis coach Joe Dunn handed out six awards at the team’s recently- held awards banquet.
The MVP Award was shared by Dan Levin and Shea McCarthy. Levin is a junior who played first singles while McCarthy is a sophomore who played at second singles.
Both made the Cape Ann League First-Team All-Stars and Levin was named the league MVP this year.
The Lynnfield Scholar Athlete Award went to senior co-captain, Rafik Khodr, who was also a CAL First-Team All-Star along with his first doubles partner, Russell Kasdon.
Sklok Kudrimoti, a sophomore who played at third singles, received the Most Improved Player Award.
The Sportsmanship Award went to senior Avi Shrivastava while Khodr and fellow senior co-captain, Sahil Akhter, both got the Team Leadership Award
It was another outstanding season for the Pioneers as they reached the the MIAA Division 4 state title match before losing to Weston to end up at 19-2
Lynnfield also won the Cape Ann League Kinney division for the fifth-straight year going a perfect 11-0., They have dominated the CAL going 50-1 in league play the past five seasons.
They matched last year doing the same thing as they lost their opening match to Division 1 power St. Jon’s Prep then won every single match until the state final loss to Weston.
“It was Deja Vu,” joked Dunn, who just completed his seventh year at the helm. “We lost some really good players from last year so to match what we did for this year exceeded my expectations.”
The team will lose three seniors Khodr, Akhter, and Shrivastava who all just graduated.
“All three of them played key roles this year and were very competitive,” said Dunn, about the senior class. “I feel bad that they had to miss their first year (Covid canceled) when they were freshman.”
Next spring the Pioneers will, again, be the favorites to win the CAL Kinney title as four of their seven starters will be back.
“I expect out starters to be even better next year and we have some good reserves who should also contribute,” said Dunn.
