WAKEFIELD — Commander Tom Collins of Wakefield’s American Legion Post 63 needs your help. The post is asking for assistance in placing flags on the over 2,000 veterans’ graves at Forest Glade and Lakeside cemeteries.
Again this year the week before Memorial Day (May 29th), the American Legion and volunteers will place the flags.
Similar to last year on Monday, May 22, members along with volunteers will assemble in front of the chapel at Lakeside Cemetery at 4 p.m. to decorate the graves.
Likewise members and volunteers will meet on Friday, May 26, at 4 p.m. at the Veterans section of Forest Glade Cemetery (front) to decorate the graves.
In the past Post 63 has had the help of school children, Girls Scouts, Boy Scouts, as well as adult groups and local volunteers. Post members hope the same volunteers an wells as others join in what has been a community project for many and one that has provided a fulfill sense of pride to honor the veterans of all wars with the American flags.
A screwdriver and a hammer are very useful in the placing of the flags
This year the post has purchased some small decals to have family members place on the corner of the gravestones of unmarked veterans’ graves. We ask any family members to contact us so we can give them one of these decals for their veterans’ unmarked graves
Please contact Tom Collins 781-245-8215 and Bill Walsh 781-245-4787 if there are any questions, to let us know you are coming to help, to get a decal, or afterwards to let us know that we have missed putting a flag on a veterans grave.
The post looks forward to having many volunteers on May 22 at Lakeside and May 26 at Forest Glade.
