SAILBOATS on Lake Quannapowitt are all part of the summer scene in Wakefield.

WAKEFIELD — The Quannapowitt Yacht Club (QYC), located in Wakefield at the end of Linda Road (via North Avenue) will host the first of three open house events on Saturday, May 16 from 9 a.m. to noon. Additional open houses will be hosted on Wednesday, May 27 from 5 to 8 p.m. and Sunday, May 31 from 1 to 4 p.m.

If you have ever wondered about all those sailboats on Lake Quannapowitt, now is your chance to learn about this wonderful local resource. Members will be on hand to answer questions about the youth sailing program, adult sailing lessons, the schedule of racing and social events for the season and becoming a member of QYC. Guests can also take a tour of the facilities and information about this historic yacht club will be available. Founded in 1895, QYC is one of the oldest inland yacht clubs in the country.

You do not need to be a member of QYC to take advantage of the youth or adult sailing lessons. However, there are many benefits to becoming a member, including reduced fees for lessons, a place to moor your boat, year round social activities and an exciting place to sail all season in a convenient location.

QYC is proud to once again offer its popular youth sailing program, a registered camp with the town of Wakefield’s Board of Health. The sailing program enrolls students starting at 8 years of age and entering third grade through high school. This is a fun way to learn to sail or to improve sailing skills. QYC also offers a racing program and participates in several regattas in Massachusetts.

Camp hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, with four sessions available: Session: I June 29 to July 3; Session II: July 13 to July 24; Session III: July 27 to Aug. 7 and Session IV: Aug. 10 to Aug. 21. The sailing program cost $615 for sailing sessions. The racing program is a four-week program that takes place during sessions I and II ($1,265) or sessions III and IV ($1,265). Registration forms and a $100 deposit are now being accepted. Forms can be downloaded at www.sailqyc.com. For further information call the Youth Sailing phone number at 781-281-9772. Note: QYC members get a reduced rate.

Sailing on Lake Quannapowitt is challenging due to ever changing winds caused by the shape of the Lake and the buildings surrounding the water. In recent years, several youth sailing alumni have participated in Olympic-class sailing events.

Whether you are an experienced sailor or are a newcomer to this sport, QYC offers a friendly and supportive environment for both individuals and families.
